New Release Round-Up 09-08-17
MOGWAI - Every Country's Sun - Temporary Residence
Every Country's Sun takes two decades of Mogwai's signature, contrasting sounds – towering intensity, pastoral introspection, synth-rock minimalism, DNA-detonating volume – and distills it, beautifully, into 56 concise minutes of gracious elegance, hymnal trance-rock, and transcendental euphoria. Produced by psych-rock luminary Dave Fridmann, it's a structural soundscape built from stark foundations up; from a gentle, twinkling, synth-rock spectre to a solid, blown-out, skyward-thrusting obelisk. There's percussive, dream-state electronics (“Coolverine”), church organs as chariots of existential fire (“Brain Sweeties”), tremulous, foreboding bleeping – possibly from a dying android (“AKA 47”). Their most transportive album yet, it also hosts their most fully realized art-pop sing-along of their storied history, “Party In The Dark,” a head-spinning disco-dream double-helix echoing New Order and The Flaming Lips, featuring Braithwaite's seldom-heard melodic vocals declaring he's “directionless and innocent, searching for another piece of mind”. This is music as a keep-out chrysalis, protective audio armor through exalting organs and portentous, dissonant guitar fuzz warping at the edges, bending the world inside-out into a reality in which you’d much rather live. The last three songs ascend into explosive exorcism, closing with the colossal “Every Country’s Sun,” its searching intensity whooshing towards infinity in a dazzling cosmic crescendo.

KIP MOORE - Slowheart - MCA Nashville
Multi-PLATINUM singer/songwriter Kip Moore announces his upcoming third studio album Slowheart, available Sept. 8. Moore, who was inspired to name the release after his fiercely loyal fans who have adopted the name SLOWHEART themselves and who "defines himself by his honesty, which feeds directly into his music, which earned him a fan base of die-hards and helped make him a breakout star in Nashville,” (Washington Post) gave fans the opportunity to view and share the album cover first via social media. The cover image, taken in Costa Rica during Kip’s extended break earlier this year, speaks to the personal nature of the collection which Rolling Stone praises for its "gut-punch of a vintage album, the vocals out front and clear as crystal." "My former guitar player called me a ‘slowheart’ many years ago, claiming I don't just jump the gun and show all my cards or my emotions on what I truly feel," said Moore. "He always said 'you're a slowheart, man...you observe before you act.' I eventually named the band the slowhearts, and my fans are the slowhearts too. And so, its only fitting that the record I've been waiting to make, was named SLOWHEART."
ARIEL PINK - Dedicated To Bobby Jameson - Mexican Summer
Ariel Pink will release his new album, Dedicated To Bobby Jameson, on September 15. The recording is his first solo album since his highly acclaimed 2014 prog-pop opus pom pom, and first full-length release with the Brooklyn-based independent label Mexican Summer. The new release’s title makes a direct and heartfelt reference to a real-life Los Angeles musician, long presumed dead, who resurfaced online in 2007 after 35 reclusive years to pen his autobiography and tragic life story. The album will also be available on Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Blue LP.

The albums cover features Yusuf's own illustration, the first time he has designed one of his covers since 1972. Yusuf has drawn additional works of art for each of the 11 songs on The Laughing Apple
THE TEXAS GENTLEMEN - TX Jelly - New West Records
The Lone Star-bred collective, The Texas Gentlemen, takes its cues from some of the iconic acts of the past — the quicksilver brilliance of The Wrecking Crew and Bob Dylan’s one-time backers The Band are the most obvious examples. Founding member, Beau Bedford, who shares chief engineering and production responsibilities at Dallas’ Modern Electric Sound Recorders, assembled The Texas Gentlemen as an all-purpose backing band for an eclectic array of singer-songwriters, including Leon Bridges, Nikki Lane, Jonathan Tyler and Paul Cauthen. That deft fusion of what came before with what is right now develops through the members’ unswerving dedication to simply play to the best of their abilities, trusting their instincts, and letting the music guide them. Case in point: TX Jelly was created in less than a week — four days, start to finish — at Muscle Shoals’ singular FAME Studios. Pared down from the 28 songs the Gentlemen recorded in that 96-hour span, TX Jelly effortlessly connects way back to what’s next, summoning the spirits of American songcraft even as it heralds the arrival of 21st century talent. Cut live, with little use for the blinding polish and careful presentation of so much modern music, TX Jelly oozes with skill backed up by that hard-won authenticity. TX Jelly moves between contemplative and raucous, encompassing the full breadth of the American experience. The music touches on blues, soul, folk, country, rock and gospel — from first track to last, you can feel The Texas Gentlemen reaching deep inside themselves and finding what’s genuine — what illuminates the truth of the country’s rich, complicated and singular artistic history — and delivering it the only way they know how: real, raw and righteous.
ANGUS & JULIA STONE - Snow - Nettwerk Records
The Sydney-born siblings produced and largely engineered Snow themselves, in Angus's cottage studio, Belafonte, in the Byron Bay hinterland. “It was quite magical because Angus and I have never spent that much time together, just the two of us,” says Julia. “The last phase of writing and recording was just eight weeks of him and me and the quiet of the land. It was a beautiful time.” Since they began in 2006, Angus & Julia Stone have amassed multi-platinum sales and numerous ARIA awards at home, and won a fanbase of millions over tours of the UK, Europe & North America.
SLOTFACE - Try Not To Freak Out - Nettwerk Records
On their debut album Try Not To Freak Out Norwegian four-piece Sløtface deliver political punk wrapped in pop packaging. They’ve won over fans and critics alike with their massive hooks, scorching riffs, and sometimes biting, sometimes earnest, yet always relatable lyrics. Sløtface are a young band poised for a break-out year on the back of a fully-formed, tenacious debut. Prior to the album’s release, the band – lead singer Haley Shea, guitarist Tor-Arne Vikingstad, bassist Lasse Lokøy, and drummer Halvard Skeie Wiencke – are taking on the EU/UK festival circuit with their powerful live show. And they are planning a North American tour in support of the album this fall.
