ON SALE $23.99 Vinyl: $16.07 Buy

Limited red colored vinyl LP pressing. Liars have, as a matter of course, sounded radically different with each album, pursuing new concepts and occupying diverse mindsets. On this, Liars' eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory. Following an amicable parting of ways with Aaron Hemphill, Liars is now Angus Andrew, who decamped to his native Australia, specifically to a remote part of the Australian bush, to create an album unlike any Liars had attempted before.

Cult Following [Vinyl]

ON SALE $18.99 Vinyl: $12.72 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

When Laurel Sprengelmeyer began performing as Little Scream in 2008, she played her first shows in Montreal using only a battered Stratotone guitar, a cigarette amp, and a mic on the floor so her feet could serve as percussion. “That’s why I always wore high heels. They made the best stomping sounds.” She would wail and coo, imitating the sounds of missing instruments that ended up as siren calls on her 2011 debut The Golden Record (Secretly Canadian/Outside Music), which Pitchfork called “a perfectly mixed bag of graceful folk, coiled pop, and expansive art rock” and NPR dubbed “absolutely captivating.” If that album was Little Scream’s searching, enchanting first step into the world, then Cult Following is the badass landmark cementing her place there.

You may not be able to see the gorgeous landscapes behind Baby Grand, Stuart McLamb’s fourth record as The Love Language, but they’re so essential to the picture you’ll feel them in every note. Started in, of all places, a cavernous Virginia hammock factory, fragmentary demos came alive when splashed by sunshine during a move across the country to California, where the album was completed. “It was something just about being in a new city, and a new light,” McLamb says, “and reopening the sessions, and this demo that I thought was a throwaway, suddenly I’m really feeling it….” You can hear the freedom kick in when the backwoods country shuffle of “Castle in the Sky” explodes into a full-on aughts anthem, equal parts outstretched arms and pumped fists.

TWTWF (Titles With The Word Fountain) is a physical companion piece to Liars' 2017 release, TFCF (Themes From Crying Fountain) and contains 37 minutes of new music. The tracks will be available digitally as part of a TFCF deluxe edition. On the release, Liar's Angus Andrew says "TWTWF was recorded during the same sessions as TFCF but I don't regard it as a collection of leftover material. To me it's more like a sequel. I chose the songs that appear on TFCF based on how well they addressed the trauma of a failed creative relationship. The material on TWTWF is more playful despite revolving around the same sentiments. There was a lot of pressure in producing TFCF as it was guaranteed to be framed by the lack of band members. I was aware that I was creating an explanation/album which required a certain awareness of the audience that was new to me. With TWTWF I felt stripped of that burden and more free to include work that could be construed as unclear or abstract."

Broemel recorded Wished Out at his newly-constructed home studio in Nashville, tracking many of the instruments alone before reaching out to several friends -- including Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Russ Pollard (Everest, Sebadoh), and My Morning Jacket bandmates Tom Blankenship and Bo Koster -- for help. He worked in spurts, taking short breaks to drive his son to school and longer breaks to hit the road with My Morning Jacket. With sunlight filtering through the studio windows during his days at home, Broemel steadily whittled his new album into shape, pulling triple duty as Wished Out's producer, engineer, and frontman along the way.

Major Stars

Motion Set [Vinyl]

ON SALE $23.99 Vinyl: $16.07 Buy

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

If it seems brighter and a bit more deafening in the world today, congratulations! You re not dead (yet) and some of your senses are still working. In fact, you might just be perceiving that there s new Major Stars in the sky one so formidable it s already been named, and you haven t even heard of it until now! Motion Set is the 9th Major Stars LP and their first on Drag City since 2010 s Return to Form, with Decibels of Gratitude appearing in 2012. This has left Starsheads around the world high and decidedly dry; for what reason a four-year gap, they ve cried, instead of the rather more ideal two-to-three? The answer lies in the very core of the band as they ve existed from the start: time and space are required to produce the necessary mass to tether their music in this flighty, over-oxygenated atmosphere of ours and after eight records, it only gets harder to find a combination of possible elements requiring three guitars and a rhythm section in search of the ultimate release with every song they play. Fortunately, Major Stars don t sell their process until it s fully melded. C mon, Wayne Rogers is no Johnny-come-lately to the scene of psychedelic guitar rock. He and Kate Biggar have been crossing axes to head-scrambling effect since the halcyon days of Crystallized Movements, in the galaxy far, far away we now call the 80s. In the 90s came collaboration with Damon & Naomi in Magic Hour and Wayne Rogers solo records, before the debut of Major Stars at Terrastock 97 the first of several appearances they eventually made at the now- defunct (and legendary) trips fest. As the years have passed, the band has evolved necessarily in their own expanding universe; since 2005, the Biggar/Rogers guitar duo has become a guitar trio, with original bassist Tom Leonard contributing to the murder of decibels. Vocally as well, Wayne s lead vocs have given way to a string of she-singers who have brought new dimensions to the the sound. The finding of Major Stars material relies more on a feeling than anything else intuition vs. accumulated knowledge, the years of process informing but never overwhelming the delightful pull of the knee-jerk if it is meant to be. As far as language is concerned, English barely cuts it! Writing for sextet involves greater complexity in the arranging of parts, but after that, there s loads of playing and playing and letting go and seeing what that sounded like an assembly process akin to working with play- doh in a room with no lights on. Every Major Stars record responds in one way or another to the one before, and to that end, Motion Set commenced with a blackout-and- start-again moment: the pulsing energy of Alert, with a view towards making more super-happy, short blues rock songs. Of course, things happen along the assembly line; the title track was played for over two years and thrown away at least once before revisitation, revitalization and recording finally happened. Now, stripped down to a mood and built back to a towering frenzy, it s the kind of song to name an album after. In a band built to achieve moments of six-string nirvana, vocalist Hayley Thompson-King provides a sufficiently versatile presence to span the crunching, ever-spiraling trinity of Biggar, Leonard and Rogers; with sirenesque flights, a reedy, Nico-like introspection and gritty, pugnacious flourishes to match the full complement of riffs being flung about. And thus, four years in the locaing Motion Set. Major Stars have been capturing and distilling lightning into bottles for a couple of decades, with each record reaching beyond what they know and delighting in what feels good to locate their desire for exploration, obliteration and rock in the present moment. Motion Set nullifies the past while standing on its vanishing shoulders, reaching ever beyond.

Merzbow + Hexa

Achromatic

ON SALE $23.99 Vinyl: $16.07 Buy

The esoteric noise duo known as HEXA is the sonic union of Xiu Xiu's focal point Jamie Stewart and sonic provocateur Lawrence English. Their collaborative work has been described as being possessed by cascading low frequency pulses and tectonic plates of sound, suspended in cavernous cathedral-like spaces.Legendary noise artist Merzbow needs no introduction, given his prolific output and notorious experiments within the realm of human endurance and audible extremes. While Merzbow has remained a solemn figure within the canon of noise, he is no stranger to the members of HEXA, having collaborated with Jamie Stewart as a duet on a collaborative Merzxiu LP in 2015. On the other side of the spectrum, Lawrence English has curated numerous concerts for Merzbow across his native Australia. The result of this collision turned into a full length album, aptly titled Achromatic. Focus laid on the severe reverberation of relative noises, brandishing extreme frequencies familiar only to Merzbow and coupled by HEXA's brutalist pulsation. Each side of the album is produced and mixed by the other, making their audio interpretation of Achromatic a sort of reverse exquisite corpse. A true snapshot afterthought from the decay of the modern age.

Particles

ON SALE $26.99 Vinyl: $18.08 Buy

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2016 release. Last summer, John Dwyer came back from an Oh Sees tour talking about a fantastic band he'd played with in Detroit called Mountains And Rainbows. What followed him home was a double-LP's worth of shopworn weirdness and a delightfully loose attitude that must have something to do with the ecstasy of a Midwestern summer. These backyard freaks jam into the twilight, led by a vocal quaver belted to the cheap seats, a groove and a grin and a heaping spoonful of "Damn, aren't you glad we came out tonight?" Vibrant and confusing like the insane-o cover artwork that appears to be constructed of many layers of fluorescent duct tape. Careening from the mellow chugger vibe on "How You Spend Your Time" to the tightly wound twitch of "Dying To Meet You," Mountains and Rainbows stretch their legs deep into the strange, with a dark oddness lurking in the corners of tunes like weirdo highlight "With Beefheart." Particles is a great addition to a little journey of one's own, perhaps, and just in time for the sunlit afternoons to come

T. Hardy Morris

Dude, The Obscure [LP]

ON SALE $19.99 Vinyl: $13.39 Buy

Athens, Georgia's T Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate, Diamond Rugs) is set to release his third solo album on May 24, 2018. Titled Dude, The Obscure, the album is a work that Morris says, "flowed from a creative space I found at the intersection of dreams and reality." In captivating songs, Morris sheds the traps of ambition and nostalgia and uncovers the strange satisfaction of living in the moment. Even the album title, “Dude, The Obscure,” hints at self-discovery. In an homage to English author Thomas Hardy’s novel, “Jude, The Obscure,” Morris reveals his love for literature, philosophy and poetry — along with a secret about his stage name. “Thomas Hardy is my given name, and Dude, The Obscure is a moniker I considered using as an artist,” Morris said. “The hat tip to the novel seemed appropriate for the album because it deals with doubts, joys, regrets and spirituality, a lifelong journey and such." Each song on the album seems compelled by Morris’ desire to help himself— and others— conquer the void of everyday meaninglessness. It’s an effort philosopher Maurice Blanchot described as the anguish of writing: “You have to cross an abyss, and if you do not jump, you do not comprehend.” Morris takes that leap to find universal truth by navigating sometimes opposing perspectives within moments that change lives. Morris beautifully warns us not to succumb to the fear of missing out that stands in the way of contentment on the album’s defining moment, “Cheating Life, Living Death.” Every dream is an invitation/ To leave your love up on the shelf/ When you walk out every evening/ Cheating life and living death." For the sessions, Morris made the familiar pilgrimage to Adam Landry’s home studio in Nashville. The longtime collaborators took their time and gave each song the opportunity to grow unaffected by outside influence except the magic that happens when two friends lock themselves in a smoky shed to make music, and a few pals stop by. Within 11 powerful songs, the Athens rocker reveals scars and shares lessons from an indie-rock odyssey that has taken him around the world and back home to find himself a little older and closer to something like enlightenment. And just in time for a new journey to begin.

More Than Enough

ON SALE $16.99 Vinyl: $11.38 Buy

MP3 Album: $7.99 Download

Limited vinyl LP pressing. 2016 release. David Nance lives in a world where rock has been influenced as much by This Kind of Punishment and The Pin Group as by The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones. Omaha's best-kept secret, up to now known primarily to DIY tape collectors and record club subscribers, Nance welcomes all with More Than Enough, his first full-band full-length, which follows the stellar but criminally under-heard 2013 Actor's Diary LP on Grapefruit Records, as well as a string of limited-edition, over-modulatingly intense and emotionally destructive cassette releases. Recorded in Los Angeles, scrapped, then re-recorded after a move back to his Omaha hometown with his wife, More Than Enough sounds like the very last record to have undergone any process longer than a few hours of recording. It's that immediate and on fire. The recipe: (a) get a shit-hot group of musicians; (b) cut songs down to their most "on" moments, or alternately let them ride a groove into the sun; (c) capture it all on actual tape. That's the Nance approach, and it's as much an ode to home-recorded brilliance as it is to whoop-ass inspiring rock. Blare on.

MP3 Album: $8.99 Download

Limited 150gm colored vinyl LP pressing including digital download. 2016 release by the alt-rock trio. Blush draws on influences such as `90s era Weezer and the Beach Boys. The record features fuzzy guitars and twinkly leads paired with soft, reverb-heavy vocals and complex harmonies. Night School was formed through a friendship bond over sharing oranges at the park. Alexandra Morte and Baylie Arin met in the spring of 2013 through mutual friends and very shortly after began working on music together. Alexandra had been working on some songs and was looking for a drummer; Baylie was the perfect match with similar musical interests and songs of her own that were a perfect fit. They began working on songs in the vein of 60's bands such as The Crystals, The Shirelles and The Shangri-las with heavy distortion and reverb on guitars. The two began to work on their debut EP Heart Beat and recorded it in the spring of 2014. After the recording of Heart Beat, Baylie's friend Cheyenne Avant, who had been living in Los Angeles, moved back up to Oakland and completed the band playing bass. Heart Beat was released in October of 2014 following a split EP with fellow label mates Dott entitled Carousel. Night School shared the stage with acts such as Best Coast, Whirr and Creepoid in 2015.

*Translucent green vinyl, single jacket with insert, standard weight, includes digital download In 1996, the Old 97 s recorded Too Far to Care. It was their major-label debut after the band signed with Elektra Records. But rather than venture into some state-of-the-art studio in New York or LA, the band decamped to Village Productions in Tornillo, Texas, a remote facility in the middle of two thousand acres of pecan trees near the Mexican border. The sound that the group captured on Too Far to Care has remained a touchstone for them. We ve always held that one up as the closest to sounding exactly like what sets us apart from the rest of the world, says Rhett Miller. And so when it came time for the Old 97 s to record the follow-up to the highest-charting album of their career, 2014 s Most Messed Up, producer Vance Powell brought up the idea of returning to Tornillo. We knew instantly that it was the perfect move, says Miller. The result is the eleven songs of Graveyard Whistling, the eleventh studio album from the Old 97 s.

Legendary guitarist with the Police, fiercely iconoclastic composer and songwriter Andy Summers has teamed up with singer songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist producer Rob Giles (The Rescues) to form Circa Zero a band poised to blow people away with it's unique brand of rock and roll intensity. Taking full advantage of an immediate musical chemistry, Circa Zero recorded their debut album Circus Hero at Summers studio Bowl of Cherries in Venice, CA. Co-produced by Summers and Giles, Circus Hero is an exhilarating musical ride created by musicians dead set on launching a long term vibrant endeavor. Fresh off the Police reunion tour, Summers was intent on remaining in the rock world after years of pushing the boundaries with his solo projects. The two-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was energized to record again and his search for a musical cohort ended when he discovered Rob Giles performing with his band the Rescues at the Troubadour. Circa Zero is an exciting new chapter for both of them the name referring to both starting with a blank musical slate to create a wholly unique sound, a sound with few if any ties to the past. "It's an uncategorizable rock record, built around great songs that we are both extremely proud of, stated Giles. Says Summers: From the start, we were on the same team going all the same places together. That kind of feeling is very rare. I had it with Sting but there's been no one else since then, so it's very magical when it happens. This is that thing.

Punk legend and X co-founder John Doe has spent decades building a career that spans across various genres and even formats, with dozens of acting credits in fi lm and TV. Particle Kid is the musical identity of singer-songwriter, musician, and visual artist Micah Nelson, who - despite his young age - has an equally impressive resume. The two have played together at Willie Nelson's Luck Reunion festival and the iconic Pappy & Harriet's in Joshua Tree, CA, as well as sharing the stage for a tribute to The Doors at the Founders Award ceremony.

On this split release, the two artists cover each others' tunes with their own interpretation. As a bonus, John Doe covers a Carter Family favorite, and Particle Kid covers outsider folk hero Michael Hurley. The release is mastered at 45RPM and pressed on a 12'' gold color LP, exclusively for Black Friday.
