Absolutely Free is a trio based in Toronto. The group formulates musical experiments based on instrumentation, compositional structure and other formal qualities ubiquitous to popular rock music. Following years of touring and releasing albums with defunct art punk band DD/MM/YYYY, the members of Absolutely Free set out to create a more hypnotic, patient music that integrates analog electronics, African polyrhythms, psychedelia, Bollywood and Krautrock.

Together they bring their considerable pedigrees into play with unexpected and original results. Contradicting expectations of a massive blow-out of sound, everyone plays with remarkable, effective restraint. Atmospheric and layered, this release features bits and pieces of identifiable rock-moves peeking out from under a thick blanket of hard-to-identify drift. Based on live recordings made on a lengthy tour of Italy in 2010, Hazel has been extensively edited and supplemented, but without losing the elemental sound of a group playing live together. Though there's plenty of weird ambient sound to be heard, this isn't a sound effects/pedalboard record. Like the previous en Form for Bla, Noble's drums anchor the music with spare and considered playing, sometimes lashing out with abstract punctuation, and other times laying out a Can-like groove. O'Malley's guitar is also restrained, providing a bed for O'Sullivan's constantly morphing Rhodes, synths and electronic effects. Kristoffer Rygg contributes a rousing vocal incantation to "Ermanna" and peppers the mix with ghostly modular details. Æthenor's catalog continues to be not like anything else out there right now. Swedish five-piece AMASON have announced the release of their first single since signing to Los Angeles based Fairfax Recordings. 'Duvan' (The Dove), which will be available on 7-inch vinyl and will also include B-side track 'Pirate.' Described by many as a 'Swedish Supergroup,' Amason are the collective talents of Petter Winnberg (Little Majorette) and Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow), Gustav Ejstes (Dungen), Nils Törnqvist (Little Majorette) and Amanda Bergman (Hajen, Idiot Wind).

Any Kind is four friends in two cities making music when the universe brings them together. Their new album, Other, was self-recorded in an old office building in Chicago. From Dub-influenced sample pastiches to ELO pop choruses, the album spans a wide range of influences and sound experiments.

The band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Dave Heumann, effortlessly weaves it's melodies and guitar solos with the often hypnotic rhythms of bassist Corey Allender and drummer Brian Carey around the deliberate keyboard of Matthew Pierce to lift the vocals. The results are a full sound delivered with a striking sense of intimacy. Throughout their time together, the Baltimore-based band have been praised for their ability to weave elaborate vocal lines, and guitar solos that often unravel into extended improvisation, but never with as much finesse as on Song of the Rose. In less practiced hands, these ideas could easily fall into contrivance, but on Song of the Rose, Arbouretum use these elements to perfect their craft of storytelling in song, both lyrically and sonically. Arbouretum recorded Song of the Rose with Steve Wright at Wrightway Studios. While previous records were recorded in a matter of days, Song of the Rose took weeks. Attention to production details augment their time-tested emphasis on capturing the energy of performance. Song of the Rose is the first time the band has mixed with Kyle Spence at his studios in Athens, GA (Kurt Vile, Luke Roberts, Harvey Milk). At the root of the songs and compositions on Song of the Rose is the concept of balance. As is true for the movements of Tai Chi, of which Dave Heumann is an avid practitioner, each motion both musical and lyrical has an equal but opposite motion, that works together harmoniously. "Woke Up On The Move" pores over nature s beauty as much as it heeds the warning of humankind s destructive potential. The variations that result from the constant push and pull throughout Song of the Rose make Arbouretum's music as arresting as it is thoughtful. The lyrical imagery makes it masterful. Arbouretum's lyrics explore elements of philosophy, mysticism, redemption, and the implications of human progress. Songs are written in poetic form as Heumann, Arbouretum's lyricist, prefers stories remain abstract and open rather than a more typical storytelling format, all within a more traditional song structure. Titular track "Song of the Rose" completes a trilogy of songs from past records, calling back to "Song of the Nile" and "Song of the Pearl," which have their roots in examining Taoist and Gnostic mythic traditions. Fittingly "Rose" is also a nod to Heumann's ancestor Richard Lovelace, a 17th century poet who penned "The Rose." The driving "Absolution Song," featuring the albums only instrumental guest appearance by Drums of Life, is a contemplation of the idea of writing and thereby absolving oneself of all wrongdoings, through the creative act, in this case, using poetic imagery. Arbouretum music takes these philosophical ideas and transforms them into a sonic experience that is at once contemplative and emotionally affecting.

WE is the new album from Canadian rock band Arcade Fire. This is the sixth Arcade Fire studio album, and is made up of seven songs that speak to this moment with unique directness. Written, recorded, and released during a critical historical juncture, they are divided into two distinct sides, “I” and “WE.” If the “I” side of the record evokes and embodies our holed-up anxiety and lack of physical connection, the “WE” side captures the excitement of new possibilities and the elevating thrill of committing to one another socially and personally. Seattle indie-pop quartet Beat Connection are back with their Anti- Records debut, Product 3. A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president’s ambassador, not the current one’s). Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. Sarah Martin (violin/ vocals) brought in the delicious ‘The Same Star’, which marries Belle and Sebastian’s melodiousness to a pounding Motown backbeat, and was produced by Leo Abrahams (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Regina Spektor). “We’d met Leo in February of 2016, and I’d say that meeting and the recording of ‘I’ll Be Your Pilot’ were the first tangible steps of this EP project,” Martin says. “We didn’t have a stack of songs to play him, but we liked him and he became a part of the plan from that point - and when I’d got to a point with ‘The Same Star’ where it just needed to be recorded, I thought it could benefit from having a producer to steer things, and fortunately we had a slot in the diary marked ‘Leo’ coming up. It’s not a song we’d laboured over playing for months - it fell together quite quickly thanks in large part to Bob’s [Bobby Kildea, guitarist] enthusiasm and Stuart’s willingness to dismember an old song and repurpose the break, so that it wasn’t just the same three chords over and over and over.” There’s one big reason why 15 songs are coming out on three EPs, rather than one album. “We’d made a couple of LPs, Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister, within the space of six months,” Murdoch says, remembering the early days of the band’s career, and how that fed into their decision-making this time. Part 2 will be released January 19th, 2018. Part 3 & a gorgeous box set + CD encompassing all three EPs will be available February 16, 2018.

Early in 2016, The Besnard Lakes released their finest album to date, the magisterial A Coliseum Complex Museum and toured worldwide throughout the following months. Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, the couple at the heart of the band, had spent the previous summer on their annual retreat to their namesake Besnard Lake. In a place with so much personal significance, they spent time writing the music that was to form the album. Culling the tracks down to an album proved a difficult task and inevitably there were tracks they loved that just didn't quite fit with the overall album. So it is with delight that almost exactly a year on, the band are able to release this 12" of two brand new, exclusive tracks written and recorded at the same time as the album. "Laura Lee" is a sibling track to the album's illustrious first single, "The Golden Lion" - spacious reverb-y drums echo around an almost sci-fi vocal line sung by Olga Goreas. Meanwhile, the title track "The Divine Wind" is the Besnard Lakes at their expansive, psychedelic best: a sustained keyboard building through to a bombastic coda, complete with Lasek's unmistakable falsetto. If you ever needed a reminder of just how unique, beautiful and far-reaching this band is, then The Besnard Lakes Are the Divine Wind delivers. They’ll be on tour on the west coast of North America in December and worldwide throughout 2017.

They are ready to frighten your children, sleep with your daughters, and make you shake, scream, and contort like it's a Depression-era, Southern exorcism. They play fast moving rock songs with exploding key and rhythm changes mid-song. They also play slow-cooked, sexed-up, bluesy things. Imagine Bowie's Hunky Dory with low, detuned, primal, Zeppelin-esqe guitar riffs. It's clear from the opening squeal of "Muthafucka" on the band's sophomore album Are You Real? that Beware of Darkness is on the up-and-up, and riding high on new wings while holding down that which endeared fans in the first place. That song's process - written by pairing a Tempest drum machine beat with a raw riff and bass line built from the bottom-end up - was a blueprint for much of the album, and finds frontman Kyle Nicolaides at his absolute peak. Elsewhere, tracks pulse and rage while soaring and chiming; all is perhaps a little less sinister this time around. Where earlier Beware of Darkness material may have fallen more on the side of leather and metal, these songs hearken to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, The Struts, Wolf Alice, Cage the Elephant, Skaters, even Nirvana. Songs like "Dope," "Summerdaze," and "Sugar in the Raw" show their subtle hip-hop influence, and in fact the trio was co-written swiftly with the female hip-hop producer Trinity, a collaboration Nicolaides says was truly magic and inspiring.

Big Harp, "It's A Shame."is sharp and swirling like a buzzsaw, the song clocks in at just under two minutes. It's hard-hitting and anchored in a great pop melody, but not overstuffed, thanks in part to the stewarding hand of stalwart producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Districts). The combination of Chris's Julian Casablanca's-esque vocals and Stefanie's solid bass result in a sharp-around-the-edges gem.

Life Dollars are accrued by attending matinees and barbecues, taking stoned naps, water sports, romantic escape and all the other things you think you haven't earned. In opposition to the monetizing of self worth, Life Dollars cannot be measured by numbers, only vague piles.

When squirming black mold in a dingy Bayshore, CA, warehouse became sentient, creaked and took humanoid form it created Blank Square and their singularly odd-punk debut, Animal I - sounding like the weirder end of Flesheaters but with a sterility that can only be contemporarily compared to Total Control's Aussie hardcore no-wave and then with a pinch of what made DNA and Mars amazing. This album is captured with plenty of concrete and sheet metal kept in the mix and a highlight towards dissonant syncopations, as if it was recorded in a empty room minus one chair and definitely down a flight of wet, cement stairs. Featuring saxophone with a mild but nauseating-at-times rippling slap delay, the band cruises on a rhythm section that sounds like they've got another house show to play tonight after this one. Rectangular in all the right places, it's uncomfortable, like sleeping in a car. For listeners who love art in their sax punk, reaching way back into California's punk history (SST would've undoubtedly dug this). There you go, weirdos.

A classic DIY release, Field Rexx was made in the sweltering summer of 2004 with no budget amidst the hiss of flies and tape. “Recorded,” according to the liner notes, “at the carny shack, fer shook n timsel on Duke’s shoot-o-matic for tisks & soda & that ol’ broke 4-track that 3-fingrd mike poured Old English on and lit on fire,” Rexx’s warped eclectic pop Americana proves that great songs and performances can transcend squalor and bad album art.  Features archival material of the original Trapper, James Earley, performing snippets of traditional hillbilly tunes.  Field Rexx is Blitzen Trapper's self-released sophomore album originally released in 2005.  It was remastered at the tail end of 2015 and is available on Record Store Day for the first time on vinyl.  A free download code including 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks is included.

Blue Blood started as a solo project by Athens music veteran and critically acclaimed fly-fishing guide Hunter Morris. As the songs came together, Hunter teamed up with members past and present of MGMT and The Whigs to flesh out these bigger ideas which would become a sort of distant, Southern third-cousin to indie rock idols Nada Surf and The Jesus And Mary Chain.

The Bright Light Social Hour is if you combined Cat Stevens with a bit of Philadelphia Soul, a splash of Stax and a ton of Can. Maybe not? Combine your own list of bands… that would be The Social Hour as long as none of the bands suck. The Pittsburgh based indie band made waves last year with their second LP (and Broken World Media debut) "Now and Loud" in 2014 with it's unique blend of spacey, delay damaged riffs and unforgettable melodies. For the past 15 months Texas group Bosque Brown have been quietly working on their sophomore full-length with producer Chris Flemmons (Baptist generals). a dramatic step forward from their debut, Plays Mara Lee Miller. Baby features a fuller sound and more expansive instrumentation. Where Mara Lee was recorded in a few short days with relatively few takes, Baby benefits from the band's ability to record closer to home, allowing them to take as much time as necessary. Baby's rich musicianship reflects Bosque Brown's increasing stature as a live band. The group took their time to find the right sounds-adding things in, taking things away, letting the songs grow under Flemmons' watchful guidance.

Sammy Brue embodies the kind of wisdom, talent and natural empathy that are often signs of age and maturity, and yet at 15 years old, Brue can place himself in the shoes of others, real or fictionalized, and write stories about them. The Ogden, UT based songwriter has been writing songs since the age of 10. He signed to New West Records at 14 and now, with his debut album in hand, Sammy Brue takes the next step forward. The forthcoming album, I Am Nice, produced by Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) and John Paul White (former Civil Wars) will be released June 9, 2017. Recorded in Florence, AL, they created a brilliant album with nuanced dimension that provides emotional resonance to Brue’s songs which Rolling Stone described as “a collection of devastatingly beautiful songs that touch on heartbreak, jealousy, God and suicide.” Rolling Stone would further declare Brue “an Americana prodigy." Though Sammy may appear quiet and unassuming, his songs speak volumes. From busking at Sundance at age 10, to opening for Justin Townes Earle, John Paul White, Lucinda Williams and John Moreland to mention a few, as well as performing at Summer Set and the Newport Folk Festival, you will be hearing a lot about Sammy Brue as he stands on the precipice of what appears to be a long and ever-evolving creative journey.

Led by vocalist Chaka Malik and guitarist Gavin Van Vlack, Burn are responsible for pushing the boundaries of hardcore since their inception in 1990. Appealing to different generations of heavy music listeners in their own unique way, they reactivated in 2015 playing festivals in the U.S. and Europe. Burn later supported Bane on their farewell tour, as well as Deftones for a number of U.S. shows. After an EP release on the Bridge 9 label, the lineup was rounded out by the incredible rhythm section of Tyler Krupsky on bass and Abbas Muhammad on drums. “Do or Die” is the highly anticipated new album from Burn. The album was engineered by Kurt Ballou (Converge) at God City Studios and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Slayer, Public Enemy, Sonic Youth). As a whole this 10 song album is a melding of infectious melody, hook laden groove, and raw hardcore emotion. An invigorating modernization and continuation down the path these visionaries forged alone two decades earlier.

Will Butler has been a member of the band Arcade Fire for over 10 years. This is his first release under his own name. Policy is American music—in the tradition of the Violent Femmes, The Breeders, The Modern Lovers, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, The Magnetic Fields, Ghostface Killah. And John Lennon (I know, but it counts). Music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world. Policy was recorded in one week in Jimi Hendrix’s old living room (upstairs at Electric Lady Studios). Jeremy Gara played drums; other musicians contributed woodwinds and backing vocals. Most everything else was played by Will.

Over the past two decades, a strong sense of place has shaped the music of CALEXICO, infusing their albums with a stylistic unpredictability and richness of texture. While 2015’s Edge of the Sun brought the Tucson-bred band to the Mexico City borough of Coyoacán, their new full-length The Thread That Keeps Us mostly came to life in a house studio near the Northern California coast nicknamed “The Phantom Ship” by CALEXICO vocalist/guitarist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino.

The Film: This strikingly shot concert documentary follows enigmatic Drag City singer-songwriter Bill Callahan on a two week tour from California to New York. For the past 25 years, under both the Smog moniker and under his own name, Callahan has cultivated a legacy as both a pioneer in the lo-fi movement and one of the country’s finest troubadours. The film is built on impressionistic scenes of Callahan’s life on the road combined with his cryptic musings ("I started playing music when I was 20, and time stopped for me then in a good way”), creating a voyeuristic glimpse into his meticulously constructed universe of disaffection and disorder. It is an austere and beautiful portrait of both the musician and the multifarious American landscape.

The Gatefold LP packaging will include the DVD of the film and an LP of exclusive vinyl only tracks.
