The musicians who play on this record -Chick Corea =-Joe Henderson - Paul Horn - Paul Motian -David Friesen, are each leader musicians in their own right making this truly an all leader date . Note that Paul Motian and Chick Corea had never played together before. Motian said "When I was called to do that date, I was stimulated to fly out from New York to do the record in LA I was curious about the process and the ultimate results which I thought should be creative considering the caliber of musicians involved. Also I had never had the joy of playing with Chick and it all just turned out to e promising as I guessed it would be " I loved It" Ceiling level motivation presided over the two days, "Chick was there in the morningwell before I arrived, working on the music " "Joe and Chick's solos were really rough passage because we tried to follow each other , You can do this only with great musicians " Henderson improvised on a very loosely formed 9/4 section and Corea had section to improvise on, The Miles Davis jewel "Blue and Green" represent a a filtered process of selecting a durable modern jazz classic,Most often it's interpreted with a focus on a pianist. The mesmeric performance features Paul Horn's luminous flute, Some of the changes for Paul's solo altering them slightly to create some differentness,Chicks solo reminds of the personal haunting touch Bill Evans, another vehicle for Henderson, " In A Place of Calling " was written as gospel blues, it's flavor and allusions are interpreted authentically by Henderson's assertive saxophone, Paul Motian bashes with a swinging rock tempo, coiling and un colling the rhythmic current. The music borders on heroic and it may well survive the tst of time
