In the December 2015 issue of Downbeat Magazine, his last album, Soul Brothers with Otis Clay, made the Best Albums of the Year List, being one of the two top rated blues albums reviewed by Downbeat in 2015. Soul Brothers was also nominated for the Blues Music Awards Soul Album of the Year and Johnny was nominated for Soul Artist of the Year at the BMA's. Tiger In A Cage was produced by three-time Grammy winner Jim Gaines. Rawls is once again backed by his acclaimed 8 piece studio group, The Rays. Southern California percussionist Jon Olazabal appears and the backing vocals are again by the Iveys. Three songs have strings added.
