It's impossible to ignore Miles Kurosky and Bill Swan's veiled threats any longer, so here's a preemptive postmortem for a group that seduced critics after casting off the yoke of the insular Elephant 6 Collective with its terrifically warm 2001 record The Coast Is Never Clear. Kurosky and Swan have-albeit half-jokingly-set the bar unreasonably high for Beulah's fourth record: if Yoko doesn't sell a buttload of copies, the band will be calling it quits for good. As in: seriously, our hands are tied, and this time we mean it. In keeping with the group's new fatalistic business outlook, Yoko has been packaged in a moodier and less sonically dense form. Beulah has pared back on the lush harmonies and achingly-precise orchestral arrangements. Still, Yoko comes across a lot like Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, another engaging record that ignored its component parts in favor of its sum; for a mad perfectionist like Kurosky, that's absolutely the wrong formula for success.
