Grammy-nominated Vocalist supreme ROSEANNA VITRO puts her personal stamp on compositions by the late, great Clare Fischer. The pianist/composer/arranger penned richly harmonic, deeply melodic music; he was a pioneering composer of renown. With their intricate structures and overlapping debts to Jazz, Afro/Cuban and Brazilian music, and classical forms, Fischer's tunes are challenging. However, Roseanna Vitro is one of the finest singers anywhere, and she rises to the occasion with a heartfelt tribute. The gifted singer is backed by her working band: Mark Soskin (Sonny Rollins' sideman) on piano, Sara Caswell (a member of Esperanza Spalding and Marc O'Connor's groups), violin, and bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Tim Horner. To add a Latin touch, they are joined by percussionist Mino Cinelu. "CLARITY: MUSIC OF CLARE FISCHER" includes several of his more widely known tunes, such as "Morning," "Seagull" and "Pensativa," as well as lesser known gems like "Take Your Breath And Sing" (originally recorded in Portuguese with a vocal group). Vitro provides new English lyrics to this and to "Love's Walk," as well as to the swinging "The Duke." A non-Fischer composed tune, "Web of Love" is included; it is by Brazilian master and Fischer favorite Ary Barroso. Clare Fischer deliberately intended to expand the jazz repertoire according to Vitro. These incredible compositions are definitely worthy of inclusion, and obviously lend themselves to modern vocal interpretation. The voice of the remarkable Roseanna Vitro does Clare Fischer, and his beguiling songs, proud.
